Tanzania Doubles its Pledge to WHO: A Commitment to Global Health Security

Geneva, 20 May 2025

In a significant move to bolster global health efforts, Tanzania has announced a major increase in its financial support to the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Abdallah S. Possi, who is the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Tanzania to the United Nations Offices and other International Organisations in Geneva, delivered the announcement. Speaking on behalf of the Tanzanian government and representing the Minister of Health, Dr. Possi reaffirmed Tanzania's strong commitment to WHO's mission during a high-level meeting.

Ambassador Possi highlighted Tanzania's leadership in health sector initiatives and its ongoing partnership with WHO. He emphasised the importance of sustainable financing for WHO, describing it as a global investment in resilience, equity, and preparedness.

Tanzania has decided to double its original pledge from $500,000 to $1 million, a significant contribution from a developing nation. This pledge underscores Tanzania's commitment to increasing domestic investment in health, particularly in the face of global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, antimicrobial resistance, and rising non-communicable diseases.

Ambassador Possi stressed the need for WHO to have predictable, flexible, and transparent funding to effectively lead global health initiatives. He called on the international community to ensure WHO can continue to protect lives, drive innovation, and build a healthier and safer world for all.

The increased contribution is more than ten times Tanzania's annual assessed contribution, marking a significant commitment to global health security. Tanzania's leadership and support for WHO are warmly welcomed and set a strong example for other nations.
